Today’s economy has taken a toll on consumers to the point that they are deciding to save money by making products opposed to buying. Paraffin is the most common type found in stores and is a petroleum based product. However, you may want to consider using another type of wax. Many soy based waxes are being produced in the united States which in turn is making it easier for the consumer to buy it and make soy candles. Also plentiful are the palm wax and the beeswax candles. For a unique mabling effect, Palm wax can be used, as it marbles as it dries. Beeswax can be found at your local beekeepers ranch.
When making candles, you need to first decide if you are going to be making dipped candles or putting them into molds. Molded candles obviously requires a mold that can withstand the heat and doesn’t stick to the wax. You can find quality molds online through retailers or you can try using your own homemade molds, like out of square milk cartons for example. Take caution though when deciding what to use as a mold for hot wax. Make sure that molds that you use or make are able to withstand high temperatures.
Candle making requires many supplies including a large pot in which to melt the wax, wicks, colorants, and fragrances. Fragrances can be natural or artificial. Some natural fragrances you could consider are tumeric and beet root. For additional variety, natural essential oils can also be used for fragrances.
You should also consider purchasing a book on the basics of candle making for beginners in case you encounter any questions or issues while you are starting out making your own. If you have the willingness to experiment and a good reference book, it won’t be long before you, too, will be making beautiful hand-crafted candles.
Within no time, you can master the art of making homemade candles. Saving money is only one of the benefits. Another is the opportunity to have a fun activity to involve your family in. Once you have mastered the art of making candles, the opportunity to sell them for an income is also present. Just a little determination and drive and you could have your own little candle making business.
